Pediatrician vs. Family Doctor: Who Should Your Child See?

Confused about whether to bring your child to a pediatrician or a family physician? Here's how to decide โ€” and when each specialist is the right choice.

One of the most common questions Filipino parents ask is: Should my child see a pediatrician or can I bring them to a family doctor? Both are excellent options, but understanding the difference helps you make the best decision for your child's health.

What Is a Pediatrician?

A pediatrician is a physician who has completed 3 additional years of specialty training focused exclusively on children's health โ€” from newborns through adolescence (typically up to age 18). They are certified by the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) and have deep expertise in childhood development, vaccines, and pediatric diseases.

What Is a Family Physician?

A family physician (or family medicine specialist) is trained to treat patients of all ages โ€” from infants to the elderly. They provide comprehensive primary care, including preventive health, chronic disease management, and routine check-ups for the entire family under one roof.

When to Choose a Pediatrician

A pediatrician is the better choice for:

  • Newborns and infants โ€” the first years of life require specialized developmental monitoring
  • Children with complex or chronic conditions โ€” asthma, congenital heart disease, diabetes, developmental delays
  • Premature babies โ€” who need neonatology expertise
  • Adolescents with growth, behavioral, or mental health concerns
  • When you want a specialist fully dedicated to child health

When a Family Physician Is a Great Choice

A family doctor works well when:

  • Your child is generally healthy and needs routine check-ups and vaccines
  • You prefer one doctor for the whole family (convenience, better medical history continuity)
  • There's no nearby pediatrician, especially in provincial areas
  • You want comprehensive care including both acute illness and preventive health

What About Well-Baby Check-Ups?

In the Philippines, well-baby visits (regular growth monitoring and vaccinations) can be done by either a pediatrician or a family physician. The DOH vaccination schedule โ€” including BCG, hepatitis B, pentavalent vaccine, and MMR โ€” can be administered by both.

Practical Tip

If you live in Metro Manila or a major city, a pediatrician is easy to access and strongly recommended for children aged 0โ€“5. In rural provinces where pediatric specialists are fewer, a well-trained family physician is an excellent and often more accessible alternative.
