Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the Philippines. These 10 symptoms should prompt you to book a cardiology appointment immediately.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the Philippines, accounting for over 20% of all deaths annually. Many cardiac conditions are preventable and treatable โ€” but only when caught early. Knowing the warning signs that warrant a visit to a cardiologist can literally save your life.

1. Chest Pain or Tightness

Any pain, pressure, squeezing, or tightness in the chest โ€” especially if it radiates to the arm, jaw, or back โ€” is a red flag. While not all chest pain is cardiac, it should always be evaluated promptly. If the pain is severe or sudden, go to the emergency room immediately.

2. Shortness of Breath

Feeling breathless during light activity (like climbing stairs) or even while resting can signal heart failure or coronary artery disease. This is especially concerning if it's a new symptom or getting progressively worse.

3. Irregular Heartbeat (Palpitations)

Occasional palpitations are common and often harmless. However, if you experience frequent, prolonged, or very rapid irregular heartbeats โ€” particularly with dizziness or chest discomfort โ€” a cardiologist should evaluate for arrhythmia.

4. Persistent Fatigue

Extreme, unexplained fatigue โ€” especially in women โ€” is a frequently overlooked heart symptom. When the heart doesn't pump efficiently, the body and brain receive less oxygen, resulting in chronic exhaustion.

5. Dizziness or Fainting

Lightheadedness or fainting (syncope) can result from dangerously low blood pressure, arrhythmia, or obstructions in blood flow. Always take fainting seriously and get a cardiac evaluation.

6. Swelling in the Legs or Ankles

Edema (fluid retention) in the lower extremities can be a sign of heart failure, where the heart is too weak to circulate blood effectively. If you notice unexplained swelling, especially combined with fatigue, see a doctor.

7. High Blood Pressure Diagnosed by Your GP

If a general practitioner has diagnosed you with hypertension (high blood pressure), a cardiology consultation is recommended to assess your cardiovascular risk and develop a long-term management plan.

8. Diabetes or High Cholesterol

Both conditions significantly increase the risk of coronary artery disease. If you have either diagnosis, a cardiologist can help you assess your heart health and create a prevention strategy.

9. Family History of Heart Disease

If a parent, sibling, or grandparent had a heart attack, stroke, or was diagnosed with heart disease before age 65 (women) or 55 (men), your risk is significantly elevated. A cardiology screening is strongly recommended.

10. You're Over 40 and Have Never Had a Heart Check

Even without symptoms, a baseline cardiovascular evaluation after age 40 โ€” especially in the Philippines where hypertension rates are high โ€” is a smart preventive measure.
